We don't plan to keep them as pets, they will be egg layers and when they are done, we plan to cull the flock. I know it will not be easy, but we'll take comfort in the thought that they were allowed to live the life a chicken should.

Thank you for sharing this at the HomeAcre Hop!

We'd love to have you back again tomorrow: http://blackfoxhomestead.com/the-homeacre-hop/Jennyhttp://www.blackfoxhomestead.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185769087747426024.post-58320465705682477692013-03-29T06:58:00.919-07:002013-03-29T06:58:00.919-07:00I appreciate the thoughtfulness of your post. I've always thought of it as a bit of cheating to get my female chicks delivered to my door in the mail. Thank you so much for this very honest, very sensitive post.

One point resonated with me and made me smile - the point you made about feeling a little like a criminal! I feel like this when I'm processing rabbits - like my neighbors are going to turn me in for animal cruelty. Chickens I have no problem with (save the usual adverse feelings to killing) but rabbits I take special care with.

Wonderful post. Your animals live such happier, more fulfilled lives on your land and processing animals is just an extension of our responsibility to them to be humane, respectful, and caring.

Have a great week! I do this with my old laying hens too.

I would love to have you share this on The HomeAcre Hop tomorrow!
http://www.theselfsufficienthomeacre.com/2013/03/the-homeacre-h…iveaway-winner.htmlLisa Lynnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02681345431037616090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1185769087747426024.post-44942592486307060792013-03-26T20:40:11.474-07:002013-03-26T20:40:11.474-07:00I am still a vegetarian, though i think i am also ...I am still a vegetarian, though i think i am also a hypocrite. i eat eggs, drink milk and know full well the fate of the males of the dairy cows, goats, ewes and chickens. I hate it. I wish i could do what you did. You are a stronger and better woman than I am. But I already knew that.
Jonathan, my brother, wrote a blog post about his farm today that you might like: cabinblog.blogspot.comSAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01272533620839689097noreply@blogger.com
